Garden Craft Ideas: Patriotic Yard Signs

One of our cutest garden craft ideas, for the 4th of July is making these patriotic yard signs. We spelled out "Liberty" using pre-cut wooden letters, but some other word ideas are "Freedom", "USA" or "America". This project is really quite easy and would make a great easy craft for kids. So if you are looking for some painting projects for kids or yourself, try this fun project! It's a great way to add a patriotic touch to your garden or patio!

Lightly sand the wooden letters and stars. Wipe them down to remove any dust.

Using outdoor paint (We used outdoor craft paint by Folk Art), paint the letters any way you like. See photo A for our example.

Next, paint the small wooden stars any way you would like, and glue them onto the letters. How many stars you use is totally up to you. After the paint has dried, glue buttons to the center of each star. See photo B.

Now you can paint the larger wooden stars any way you would like. We layered two sizes of stars, and then glued buttons in the center again. See photo C.

You will next be gluing the letters and large stars to dowels or stakes. If you plan on using these in a flower pot with potting soil, then a thin dowel would be fine. However, if you plan on putting these in a flower bed, you may want to use a sturdier stake, since the ground might be pretty firm.

If you are using a dowel, glue the dowel just below the top on the letter or star (see photo D). But if you are using stakes, be sure the top of the stake goes up past the top of the letters. This way the top of the stake can be hammered into the ground without hitting the letter with your hammer.

Now just put them out in your yard and you are done!
